202nd day in the UoA

The ability to imagine and understand the other person’s feelings and thoughts by putting yourself in their shoes is particularly important when you work in a team on a project. To improve this ability, it is necessary to listen to others with interests, trying to understand what they are saying, and to engage in a “dialogue”. Today's newsletter is about the dialogue.

>> Let’s acquire social skills! ? Part 3: An encouragement of dialogues <<

When we have trouble with others, we sometimes try to settle the situation by saying, “Let’s talk about it and we can figure this out.” Is it true that we can figure it out by talking? By the way, Hiroyuki, a famous business person, recently claimed “There are stupid people who believe they will understand if they talk.”

I also think that “We understand if we talk” is not true. In order to understand by talking, everyone who participates in the dialogue needs to make efforts, because the same words that each person uses has a slightly different meaning. We use words by abstracting the truth, and there are individual differences in the process of abstraction. As a result, the same words can have a slightly different meaning, which makes it difficult to understand each other just by talking. In order to understand by talking, each person needs to try to do so. Especially when we are having a problem, we have to try to reach out to the other party and talk with them, not only just exchanging words.

This way of talking, namely, talking with another person for the purpose of discovering the meaning that we share, is called a “dialogue” or taiwa. In recent years, the importance of dialogues is emphasized in many occasions. For example, in the elementary and junior high school education, “deep learning that involves students’ initiative and dialogues” is aimed at as a goal. Because dialogues will become even more important in the future society, it is hoped that young students learn to carry out a proper dialogue. The key point to have a good dialogue is to have interests in the meaning of the words that the other person uses in daily conversations. Meaning of words is created in relations to his/her social relationship, namely as a result of his/her experience. Therefore, only by respecting others can we understand what the language the other person uses means.

If you try to have a proper dialogue with others on a daily basis, I think you will have a better relationship with others. (Psychologist Mameo)
