104th day in the UoA /

Dear students of the University of Aizu,

The spread of the novel coronavirus infection is not under control in Tokyo. If you have to go to Tokyo for job hunting or other important reasons, please take sufficient preventive measures. If you are on campus, please take full measures to the extent that you feel safe even if an infected person without any symptoms is around!

★ From the Counselor ★
At this time of the year, we often see a sign which says “Doyo-no ushi-no-hi,” or the Midsummer Day of the Ox, in a grocery store. This year, the days of “Doyo-no ushi” are July 21 and August 2. In Japan, we eat eels on the day of “Doyo-no ushi”.
We have been having rainy and humid days. Our feelings and energy can be down in such a time. It is important to have nutritious meals to prevent feeling weary because of the heat and improve the immunity. Because body and mind are connected, by having a lot of nutrition, your emotions will be more stable. Don’t rely on instant food or side dishes which are easy to get, and try to have well-balanced meals.
By the way, I hear there used to be a custom in which people ate food that started with “u,” which is the first letter of “Ushi-no-hi”, not to feel tired in the mid-summer. It may be interesting to look for such food when you go grocery shopping!

★ From the Nurse ★
There are two kinds of diabetes, type 1 and type 2. If you have type 1 diabetes, your autoimmune system attacks the pancreas, which stops secretion of insulin. It is said that type 2 diabetes develops due to unhealthy diet, lack of exercise and resulting obesity in addition to a genetic contributor. At an early stage of diabetes, you might experience polydipsia (excessive thirst), excessive urination, or fatigue, but very often it progresses without any awareness or symptoms until you have a medical check-up. When it advances, you will have major disease complications such as impaired eyesight (retinopathy), deteriorating kidney functions (nephropathy), or neural disorder (numbness in a limb).
The analysis of various characteristics of type 2 diabetes has revealed complications that are incurred by different kinds of diabetes. If the diabetes causes the increase of insulin resistance (and subsequent increase of fat around internal organs, or visceral fat), nephropathy often takes place, which requires artificial dialysis. On the other hand, if the diabetes causes the decrease in the secretion of insulin, retinopathy often occurs, which may result in loss of vision.
Every year, there are several people who are tested positive for urinal sugar in the medical checkup in the UoA. Also, you can check your visceral fat with a body composition analyzer in the nurse’s office.

If you are interested in type 2 diabetes, please refer to the following.
